About Junko
Expertise
I can answer most questions pertaining to teen health, thought I cannot give medical advice. I can explain medical terminology, describe medical conditions and hopefully help people understand what is going on with their bodies. If I don`t know an answer to a question, being a medical student, I can easily find out the answer since I have many resources I can refer to.

Experience
I am a 4th year medical student.

Question
Hi,

Should I be concerned how my stool looks? I know its mostly always green and is made up of tiny pieces or chunks. :S It scares me the way it looks....how do I know if they are bloody? I know yesterday I saw a little spot of red in them.

Also....what do you mean by watery?

I know drinking tea in the morning helps my bowels a lot..

thanks... :(

Answer
Hi Kevin,

By watery stool, I mean something like diarrhea.  You don't need to overanalyze what your stool looks like, but it's good to be aware if it looks different than usual.  What you eat can affect what your stool looks like quite a bit so  it may look different from time to time.  Green stool is not necessarily abnormal and can be caused by eating green foods,  vitamins, or foods rich in iron.  Again, if this continues for a long time or you stool changes consistency, then you may want to see a doctor.

Blood in your stool can be anywhere from black to maroon to a bright red color.  You may detect blood in your stool on your toilet paper when you wipe.  If you haven't eaten any red foods (e.g. red peppers), and you don't think the red spot is a piece of food, then you should go see a doctor.
