About Junko
Expertise
I can answer most questions pertaining to teen health, thought I cannot give medical advice. I can explain medical terminology, describe medical conditions and hopefully help people understand what is going on with their bodies. If I don`t know an answer to a question, being a medical student, I can easily find out the answer since I have many resources I can refer to.

Experience
I am a 4th year medical student.

Subject: my period

Question
ok so i am 12 years old and 8 months.........last weekend i got brown dischrge from my vagina. i changed my undies and decided to put in some toilet paper just incase it happened again. a few hours lated there was a little bit of barley visable blood, it stoped a few hours after that. i felt totally normal and had NO crampos or anything. it didn't seem like a period to me, was it? my mom didn't get hers till she was 15 and im much younger than that. i din't tell my mum about this cuz i dont want to say anything unless i get a real period. whats going on and what should i do? will it happen again soon?

Answer
Hi Nicole,

Yes, the brown discharge and little bit of blood was most likely your first period. It's very common to have a first period like that. The brown discharge is old blood and is something you might see again at the beginning and/or end of your next period.

While the age your mom had her first period is an indicator of when you might get yours, it's not definite by any means. It's hard to say when you will get your period again. During the first year after girls get their first period, it's pretty common to be irregular, so you may not get your period every month. The next time you get your period, it will likely be heavier and you may need to use a pad or tampon to absorb the blood. You should talk to your mom so she can help you with this.

I hope this helps, and good luck!
