About Junko
Expertise
I can answer most questions pertaining to teen health, thought I cannot give medical advice. I can explain medical terminology, describe medical conditions and hopefully help people understand what is going on with their bodies. If I don`t know an answer to a question, being a medical student, I can easily find out the answer since I have many resources I can refer to.

Experience
I am a 4th year medical student.

Question
I'm going to get my tongue pierced not exactly sure if i'm going to a place or just have a friend do it. If I have my friend do it I will have a clamp on so he doesn't put it in the wrong spot. What danger is involved in just having my friend do it? Thanks!

Answer
Hi Shaun,

I really wouldn't recommend having your friend pierce your tongue unless he/she is a professional body piercer.  It's extremely important to have sterile instruments (to prevent infection) and to know where to put the piercing.  Even when done professionally, there is a risk of hitting a blood vessel in the tongue and causing lots of bleeding.  If your friend isn't experienced and something goes wrong, he/she will probably panic and won't know what to do.  It would be much safer if you got it done by a professional.

Also, I'm not trying to tell you not to pierce your tongue, but I just want to make sure you're aware of the possible consequences of getting a tongue piercing.  People with tongue piercings often get chipped or worn out teeth and gums due to rubbing of the barbells against the back of their front teeth and gums.  So, be careful with your piercing, and good luck!
