Subject: what do you do for weak ankles?

Question
hi my name is lauren and i am 13 years old..  I exercise a lot, but one of the problems that i have is weak ankles.  I am constantly rolling my ankles, and I dont know how to strengthen them.  Could you help?

Answer
Lauren,
This is a very good question.  I am glad that you asked.
There are a few things that you can work on to strengthen your ankles.  The first thing is that you can work on balance (standing on one foot) and even one leg calf raises.  From there you can work to side to side hops and front and back hops.  These will help in what is called proprioception.  This is important in getting the muscles to fire so that if you are in a compromising situation your ankles will react better.
If you can find "TheraBand" at your pharmacy (it is a resistance band used for stengthening and comes in different colors according to strength).  Get the heaviest and work on in and out as well as up and down with your ankles.  This will strengthen your ankles.
If this does not improve you rolling your ankles then it would be good to see your doctor and inquire about physical therapy.
Best of luck,
Ryan
