Subject: Why does society need the artist?

Question
QUESTION: Hey! I'm doing a media project presentaion on Friday for my english class. We have to answer one of 3 questions in a creative way, and I decided to sing a song that my singing group and I wrote together. However we also need some extra text and images. The question I am answering is "Why does society need the artist?" I just want to know your personal thoughts and see if I can work that in! Thanks

ANSWER: A very original question. I was getting tired of the "How does music change society". Refreshing in a sense. Alight well in my opinion, a society is made up of people. An individual person who gets together with other people and eventually forms the society. Now in each person, there is always a huge amounts of emotion that is trying to get out. I believe music is that outlet. Someone writes a song, voices out their emotion and/or opinion and that in turn leads the individual person to feel that since they let out their emotion, it sort of relieves some pressure in them. It's like an emotion such as love. A person loves this other person so much but can't express it. A band sings about love and that matches perfectly to what the original person was feeling and in a way, it releases the tension and pressure. Relief from keeping those emotions in.

I also believe that the society look towards artists for inspiration. Such as back in the day, a fleet of marching soldiers would have a drummer beating a tune so that the soldiers would feel inspired. Also, soldiers now a day listen to music in their station to get pumped up and inspired to do their job.

I hope that answers your question. Music is a beautiful thing. Good luck with your report.

QUESTION: Hey Greg! I just wanted to say that your answer helped me SO much. I was wondering though, I was reading some of your previous answers and you stated that "For some [music] is sort of an outlet from the real world and others it's a temporary safe haven." I was curious as to what you meant by a temporary safe haven. Thank you!

Answer
Well that is a good question actually. Well what I meant was that you can sort of have your own time when you listen to your music. It's like you can escape your own world by listening to music. It's referring to what people do when they listen to music. They forget everything that is around them and drift into their own world. Sort of like that. You can hear your thoughts and no one is there to oppose you. Just peace. That's what i meant.
