Question
hello, i am a student at Oceana High School. i am doing a project that involves music and it's influence to the listeners. my essential question for this project is "How does music influence the minds of listeners, especially in committing violent acts?" i was wondering if you can answer some questions about it.
1. what is the age of the listeners that commits crimes?
2. what type of music is mostly considered as violent?
3. does the teens who committed the crimes have a good relationship with their family and friends?
4. are the bands/artists' lyrics too violent for the listeners?
5. are the lyrics protected by the Freedom of Speech amendment?

you have probably answered these questions before, but it would really help if you will still take some time into answering these questions. if you can, please add some more important facts that you know about the bad things and the good things about music, it would be greatly appreciated.

thank you very much for your time,
John Paulo

Answer
Alright before I answer this, I would like you to know three things. 1) We are not allowed to answer these homework questions and infact, we have a button that says "This is a homework question".
2) This answer will be my opinion of what I know.
3) Music is not the only thing that influences people to commit acts of violence. It is one reason but not THE reason.

So to your questions:
1) The age of listeners are usually from 12-65. I say this because this is the time where people are learning how difficult it is to make a living and this is generally where most people have mid life crisises and so forth. Also, any younger and most kids don't listen to any "violent" music and any older, people don't have much to worry about usually.

2) Any music can be considered violent. Society thinks it's bands like Slipknot and Mudvayne but this is not only the case. Rap, Rock, Country, oldies, anything. I repeat, ANYTHING can be considered violent. If you pin it only on rock, then you are just going with the flow.

3) Both, teens that have a good relationship with their parents and teens that don't have a good relationship commit crimes. Crime as in not only school shootings but anything that goes against the law. Some of these people have a great relationship with their parents but just chooses to commit crimes because of the spur of the moment or just because they are angry.

4) Artists write what they feel and what they think other people will like. I think the listener might be sometimes too violent for the artist.

5) The lyrics are protected by the freedom of speech amendment because no one is forcing you to listen to it. You freely buy the cd or listen to that radio station for a reason. No one is forcing it upon you. Just like how cursing is a loud on paid tv but not on public channels. It is fully protected

I would also like to add that anyone can commit a crime and the blame should go evenly on the media, movies and the world itself. Turn on the tv and a lot of the shows are about sex and crimes and so forth. Watch a movie, a lot of it has people's heads being blow off by someone else. Listen to the news, they alwasy report something about a school shooting or a gang killing. You want to blame it on someone? Blame it on all of us. Not just music. I hope that answers your question.
