Expert: Robert Flynn Date: 2/18/2008 Subject: teen music...again
Question the only questtion i wanted to ask is does teen music really create the teens everybody complains about everyday? my family thinks the music i listen to is causeing me to be curupted i and i wanted somone elses opinion on the subject and you seemed like the guy.
Answer Well what kind of music is it you listen to?
Personally I don't think Music has an affect on how teenagers act or respond, I dont know how to explain that. Music does alter a persons life in some ways but Ive never known it to be corrupt.
Here is something I answered a while back - the question was,
''hey rob,
I need another person's opinion on how music affects teen's behavior. I need any information you can give me and your opinion on whether you feel that music has a positive or negative impact on a teen. I need to write this essay along with another on a global issue to get into this Governor's School for International Studies. So if there is any way that you can aid me, please do. I need an answer ASAP because the deadline is January.
Thank you for your time...
John''
my answer was
''Well I'll try my best to answer, I think I understand what you mean - It really does depend on the music genre to be honest.
I'm going to try and not stereotype and use the correct sort of terminology for this. You can't generalize whether 'MUSIC' has a positive or negative effect on teens cause like I said it really depends on what genre of music it is. OK - Music can have effect on teens cause it can sort of carve their lifestyle - their image - you could say some Music Idols are about image, Music can be linked with image - I find anyway, certain music cultures have a certain image that you would see teens or adults for that matter following.
I think I can definitely say that some Music provokes certain images, but I don't know how that can have a positive or negative effect on people, it can be good and it can be bad, it can be good say for example- a certain music genre can help soothe emotional pain as such, or it can be bad in the sense I'm not sure - it can evoke emotional pain by sort of provoking depression.
If you understand what I mean.
I think that certain music genres has a different impact and that it would be impossible just to say Music as a whole -has certain good or bad impacts.
Although - I think I know what you mean [I am ranting a bit here, so don't fuss whether this answer is all over the place].
Music can have a positive impact on teens cause it can teach them a bit more about themselves as people cause Music sort of links you with an image, so it kind of helps to find the person you are and how you represent yourself to people as well. I found that at an early age my music taste was definitely linked with a certain image which was like Grunger/Punk/Rocker - since I was listening to all kinds of Rock/Metal/Punk, I definitely learned that the whole linking music with the image thing was not the right idea now I'm into everything and dress my own way. So I guess that can be one positive impact, Music can help teach you about the person you are, and teach you how to represent yourself to other people and other cultures.
It can also be a good way to get messages across IE express yourself and your feelings through music rather than just normal conversation, it can help teens to be a bit more sociable in that sense.
Also, when listening to music it can be a sort of output- in the sense that your just chilling out/letting yourself go/getting your anger out. It can be sort of stress free and get rid of the shit parts of your day or you could embrace the good parts, performing music or just simply listening to it. Teens could listen to Music and release their tension/stress.
Again as I was saying before - It can have a positive impact on people cause they can learn about the person they really are IE if the rock culture scene isn't for them, maybe they should try another scene - although I wouldn't heavily promote associating yourself with a certain scene, some teens need to feel like they belong to something - it gives them a sense of identity in that sense.
Music is such a wonderful thing, and I don't know how it could have a negative impact on anyone.
One thing I could say though is that the Music Industry is sort of very corrupt and abusive in the sense, Rockstars and Popstars are doing damage to themselves, wallowing in their own wealth, and abusing the power, this can have a negative impact on teens because these teens idolize and in some cases worship certain Rockstars etc. and they could take after this, and think well ya know - they're doing it so will we. Thats the only real negative impact that comes to mind.
Some music styles can also link themselves with a bad culture like, I wouldn't say all punks are bad, but they're not exactly the most pleasant people to come across when intoxicated. It is stereotyping/generalizing but I was only using that as an example - different music scenes can be linked with different images. For example the dance scene - the amount of drugs that flow through the Dance scene is a bit wild. So I guess they're negative aspects and can definitely lead teens on to these certain things, but then again I'm sure they think the world of it.
At the end of the day - I think Music CAN carve the person you are, and as long as you're happy with it then everything 's good.
