About Lyndsay Mercier
Expertise
I can answer questions regarding pregnancy symptoms, possible ways of becoming pregnant, how to help avoid pregnancy, various options regarding your choices involving an unplanned pregnancy, etc. I can offer advice, answers, a kind word, or just listen.

Experience
I was once a pregnant 15 year old, and it was traumatizing. I considered adoption, abortion, and parenthood and came to a conclusion. I was fortunate enough to have a supportive family, but not everyone is as lucky as I was. I have firsthand experience on what it feels like to discover an unplanned, teen pregnancy, as well as experience with coping.

Organizations
I am the President of VOX:Voices for Planned Parenthood, which is a non-profit student organization focusing on sexual health and education, as well as reproductive rights and freedom.

Publications
I have written an article regarding my own teen pregnancy story which will be published on www.Teenwire.com on June 24th.

Education/Credentials
I am currently a senior at Northern Michigan University majoring in Psychology and minoring in Sociology and Gender Studies. I am trained and certified in Sexual Health Peer Education and am currently teaching a college course focusing on STI prevention.

Subject: i have talked to deborah, && it says shes maxed out?

Question
i had two questions i asked her, && she answered both. the messages are the following.
once you read that, i have another question that i need to ask you. it will be at the bottom of this! so please answer when possible.

Subject   Could i be pregnant?
Question   QUESTION: Alright! I had sex on may 3 & 4, as well as, on the 17. I had started my
period five days later! I usually start my period the day after the previous
month. Well I haven't started yet. I had taken a pregnancy test on the 23 of
June (around 5ish) and then the next morning, they both came out negative. I
still haven't started. I have been having the following syptoms: abdominal
cramping, lower back pain, going to the bathroom a little more, my breasts
have only gotten a little bigger, wanting to eat more (like 45 minutes after
being full), burping more manly, farting a tiny more, and it just hurts to lay on
mu stomach or just sit (i have to just lay back if i was sitting). Im just
confused! Could i be pregnant? My best friend (who is also pregnant), her
boyfriend, and my boyfriend is going to get me to take another next week
though if I haven't started my period yet!

ANSWER: Dear Krystal,

Let me see if I am understanding you.
May 3, 4, 17th, you had sex.  5 days later, 17 + 5 = 22  May 22 you got your period.

During the month of June, no sex?

Then when June's period was due, no period, right?

The pregnancy test you took at 5 on June 23 would not be accurate because you took it at the wrong time.  You have to take the test the first thing in the morning when your urine is the most concentrated.
The test you took the next morning, however, should have picked up a pregnancy.

All I can suggest is what your boyfriend already suggested.  Test again. Just be sure to take the test first thing in the morning.

Best wishes,

Deb

QUESTION: Yes, I haven't had sex in June. My bestfriend said it may be just to early to
know. Is that possible?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Answer   Dear Krystal,

Some women get negative results for months and they actually are pregnant.  This is rare but it does happen.  If the next test you take is negative and you still haven't had your period, get a blood test done at a medical facility.

The rule of thumb, however, is most pregnancy tests work as soon as you have missed your period, or two weeks after the sexual intercourse that may have impregnated you.  These two dates usually are pretty close to each other.

Take care,

Deb

   [MY QUESTION FOR YOU]

Today, i started bleeding a little bit. It was red and brown. My usual periods are most of the time heavy, and I go through a tampon in about 2 and a half hours up to 3 hours. I thought i could have started my period, so I had put one in. Two hours later I checked and it wasn't even three quaters full. So I put in another, and it turned out to be the same thing. Now I'm just using a pad. After thirty minutes of putting it on, there's hardly no blood. Could I possible be spotting or be on my period? If i was on my period, is it possible to still be pregnant? If I'm spotting, is that ok after about five weeks of maybe being pregnant? Thankyou!

Answer
Krystal,

Most likely, you got your period. But to answer your question, it is possible to have your period and still be pregnant, but it is pretty rare. And yes, if you are 5 weeks pregnant, spotting usually doesn't mean anything is wrong.

I will also suggest you get a blood test done, since that is the only sure-fire way to detect a pregnancy, even though home pregnancy tests are over 99 percent effective.

Good luck,

Lyndsay
