Expert: Deborah - 10/30/2009
Question Hello, First off I'd like to say i am very grateful they have sites like this ... and now then ... I have a gf who is 17 and i have gave her pregnancy tests and it comes up negative, but her tummy defiantly has a hump .. she is a very skinny girl and its pretty noticeable, but anyway she has told me that she has went to the doctor and that her blood test came back positive ... i was wondering if there is anyway that this is possible? She is about 12 weeks pregnant I would estimate ... and I was also wondering how it could happen that the urine would be negative but positive blood ... and also the test were the cheap equate kind could that possibly be the problem and if so what kind should i buy?
thanks.
Answer Dear Josh,
Ask her what her HCG hormone levels where. Anything above 25 is considered positive for pregnancy.
If she took the urine tests too early they could have shown negative but the blood test came out positive because it was a more sensitive test. Have her take the urine test again, but this time have her take it first thing in the morning when she wakes up and goes to the bathroom for the first time. This is when HCG levels are the most concentrated, making the test more likely to pick it up.
Get one digital test and one regular test. She's probably too early to have a "bump" from pregnancy. It is likely from something else.
Best wishes,
Deb
