Expert: Deborah - 9/14/2009

Question
i am 17 years old, i have missed my period and it has never happend to me before. i am sexual active but i havent had sex in two months. it was june 2009 the last time i did, it is now sept 2009. the july and augest after i had sex i got my period and they were normal. but now i am about 14 days late. could i be pregnant?

Answer
Tina,

If those weren't actually periods you were having, but spotting which sometimes occurs during pregnancy, you could be pregnant. However, it doesn't sound like you are pregnant.  If they were really periods, there is no way for you to be pregnant.  The embryo attaches to the uterine wall, and the uterine wall is shed during menstruation.  Therefore, the embryo would have been shed along with the uterine wall (which is blood).

The only way to know for sure is to take a home pregnancy test.

Good luck,

Deb
