Question
I have a full tennis scholarship to a division one school. However I have been
playing for 16 years now and I am very burnt out. It's not that I hate tennis,
its just that I am at that age where its not on my mind. I have accepted that I
will not be the best and therefore I set my goals at a low standard. I am a very
competitive person and if I cant win then it kills me. This is true with
everything but tennis. I assume that it is because I have played for such a
long time that I have accepted that I will never be the best. I know the answer
seems to be "just work harder", but the fact of the matter is, I hate practice! It
bores me to death and I have ADD and it is so hard for me to focus in the first
place. I live at a tennis academy and am forced to play day in and day out. It
is draining to have to go out and force yourself to do something that you
dislike each and everyday. But I have a scholarship at my soon to be college.
My parents cant afford to pay for college alone because they have put all of
my college money into my tennis fund. Therefore I am stuck. I must play the
next 4 years of college so that my parents do not have to pay. Another thing
that scares me is that there is a possibility that I could lose my scholarship
because I hate tennis so much. Being the end of my senior year, it is hard for
me to devote myself to anything else but the things I want to do. Tennis is
not one of them. Therefore I go to practice and do not try as hard as I can
and most likely gain nothing from the experience. When I go to college, I
have to maintain a certain performance level. If I fall below this standard, I
could lose my scholarship. What in the world should I do?

Answer
Hi,
A good idea is to talk to a trusted teacher. I had a problem like yours, yet with chess instead of tennis. I did take a break from chess and while it did help clear my mind, it did cause a problem with my self getting into college. I recommend our Tennis area to see what the pro's say. I also recommend asking follow ups here. We can compare my chess to your game.
