Subject: Dad leaving to afganistan (12 years old)

Question
Well, my dad is leaving to afganistan. Today, for a year. There is a good possibility he would be here for my 13th birthday..And to me the 13th birthday is most important..
My dad is being deployed for the state's goverment's reasons..He is not a soldier. But to me, it's just the same. Once i asked him, what is the percentage of him being bombed/killed..He said a very small chance. Chance or no Chance he could be killed. What really ticks me off is that one day he said the president would be happy he is going. I remarked, "Have you even met him?" no. "Does he even know your name" no. Please help me, I need this question anwsered, Is there any possible way to cope with this?

Answer
Hi Elspeth,
Just know that your dad is going to keep you safe here. It's people like him that have brought our country to where it is now. I admire anyone who is over there right now. I don't think I could do it. My dad alost had to go fight in a war and luckily he wasn't drafted. I am so sorry that you have to go through this right now. I hope he will he okay. Right now there actually is a smaller chance of him being hurt is Afganistan then if he were going to Iraq. Make sure you consider that. That's a good thing. What is he going over there to do? It doesn't sound like he is going to fight so he could very well come home just like he is now. The president would be happy he is going. The president doesn't want to have a lot of people there fighting but he also wants other people to have the freedoms we have. And he is proud that so many men and women are willing to go over seas to get those freedoms. I hoped I helped a little. Tell your dad I wish him the best and I hope he comes home soon and safe. If you need anything else just ask.
