Question Hi, I'm Meg and I am 15 years old. It probably sounds harsh but sometimes I really hate myself and my body because I feel that sometimes people are staring at me on the street and when I'm out, I've been trying to loose weight and starving myself to fit in with my cousin and her group of thin and pretty friends, it really gets to me when they all go and hang out at the beach together in bikinis and they all look great and always attract boys but when I go with them I look huge and I feel like none of the girls really feel like they want to be seen talking to me because boys always avoid me and I'm pretty ugly and boy-ish. I went out once with them and it was so awkward for them so I've never been out with them again. My mother got depression just after I was born and I was wondering if I could have it because she didnt develop depression 5 years earlier when my brother was born, only after I was born and as I said, sometimes I really hate myself.
Answer Hi Meg. Depression can be genetic so it’s possible you could have it. It might be a good idea to see someone and get properly diagnosed.
Starving yourself won’t help at all; when you starve yourself you put weight on first before you lose it. Also it is bad for your health; your immune system would be lowered and your organs could start shutting down. Eating disorders are very dangerous. I’d recommend eating healthier food. Try eating fruit as snacks instead of the usual sweet stuff, have a varied diet, and don’t eat too much processed or frozen food, no matter how healthy the packet says it is. Also drink lots of water and get some daily exercise, even if you’re just going for a walk everyday. Eat your food slowly, and don’t keep eating until you feel full, because it takes about twenty minutes for your body to register that you are full and if you keep eating until you feel full then you’ll end up feeling ill afterwards. I hope that made sense. Anyway, try this out and see how it goes; don’t expect instant results, it will take a few weeks to notice a difference, but it will work a lot better than starving yourself and will be much safer too. Best of luck.
