Subject: Speakerphone interference

Question
One of our Nortel telephones which is being used on a landline has a lot of interference whenever the speakerphone is being used. The noise is heard by the listener at the other end but not in our office. The phone is new and was replaced due to the same problem on the previous set. Is there a way to correct this? The set is in a small office which also has a computer, a television set with a digital box, two remotes and a desk lamp and everything plugs into the wall in close proximity.

Answer
Robin,
Based on the information you provided, let's start with the other devices near your phone.

Move them all as far away from the telephone as possible, or move the phone. Try plugging the electric cord into another outlet that does not share the same circuit as the other devices.

Make sure if you have DSL service that the DSL line filter is plugged in and the phone is using the correct port.

Check the settings on your phone to minimize background noise.

Try to move the cables from your computer (speakers, screen, electric, and dsl cord away from EACH OTHER as well as your modem and phone)

If possible, ensure the electric connection for your phone is plugged into it's own outlet (with nothing else using it.)

If the desk lamp is a florescent one try using an incandescent one.
