Expert: Spencer Holcombe Date: 3/14/2005 Subject: Question on VOP, that Time Warner is offering on their Digital phone.
Question Hello Spencer,
I wanted to write tonight to find out some info on VOP (Voice Over Protocol). I think that is what it is called. What I am checking into is the new Digital Phone system, that is being offered by Time Warner Cable. I am just about sold on it but I was told today that they can't be used for any kind of dial up service or for faxes either. I wanted to find out why and also if there is any way to get it to work for a dial up service? I have a webtv and have had one now for over 7 years. I know it's not the most up to date thing on the market but I am disabled and it works just Great for what I use it for. I do know that MSN does have a new system out, that works just like the webtv but it run's over either a DSL or a cable modem, I have not looked into it much yet though.
Any info you can give me on this would be greatly appreciated.
Have A Nice NIght,
Tim :)
Answer Hi Tim, I really can't help you too much with VOIP-Voice Over Internet Protocol. I know it's more complicated than they would have you believe, and that fax service, dial ups, alarm lines, and others won't run on it. My advice is to wait until your local teleco offers it, as the price should drop, and the qlitches should be worked out. In the meantime, you can find out more info by going to your WebTV and entering: voip. You didn't state where you're located, but I don't think you'll have too long to wait before this is offered at a lower price AND runs faxes, etc... Spencer
