Subject: T1 screened cable

Question
Hi

What is the maximum specified distance for a screened twisted pair cable when transporting T1(GR303)at 1.5Mbit/s?

Is unscreened cable the same?

Thank you

Answer
You must mean shielded twisted pair?  I asked our cable expert, and he said that 100 meters (327 feet) is the standard length for copper wire.  There would be limited applications for shielded over unshielded, for example elevator equipment, transformers, uninterrupted power supply.  The same standards apply for shielded versus unshielded.  For data transmission, if a longer run is required, optical fiber might be run up to the building, with copper completing the run.  The recommended lengths for various conductive media are published in the TIA/EIA 568-A publication of 1995.  This stands for Electrical Industry Association/Telecom Industry Association.  Thanks for asking, as I learned something, too.  –John White.
