Question
Hi!  I currently work from home doing transcription for a friend of a friend.  I got the job via referral.  I am currently looking for a new work at home opportunity.  Can you recommend reputable sources for finding this type of work?  How can I tell who is legit?

Answer
Hi Tanya,
You have a couple of options. Transcription work is a growing area (do you do general or medical or both?) so searching job boards is a good place start. Avoid or at least scrutinize any job listed as "typing" as most will be scams. Legit jobs will most likely be advertised as "transcriber", "general transcription", "medical transcription" or some variation of these.

If the "job" asks for money, its a scam. Don't do it. A real job (like any job) will want you to have experience and often meet a specific typing speed. Some will even ask you to take a typing test.

You can visit Work-At-Home Success to see some places I use to search for work. You can sign up for the newsletter as well to get jobs and other helpful work-at-home info each Friday. I usually have a couple transcription jobs posted. http://www.workathomesuccess.com/work-from-home-job-search.html

You should consider starting your own Virtual Assistant business as you'll be able to command more income. Whereas a job might pay you $8-10 an hour, a VA can charge $15-$25 or more depending on work you do. Good luck.
