Subject: part time telecommuting controller job

Question
Dear Leslie,
I am currently employed as the Chief Financial Officer for a solid manufacturing company.  I enjoy my job and I am well paid.  However. due to 3 daughters, tuition and car expenses and future weddings I very much want a part time controller job in which I could work from my home office via telecommuting.  I can devote 10-15 hours per week.  It would seem to be an ideal situation for a company that is too small to hire a full time controller and doesn't want to pay an outside CPA firm 100 plus per hour.  I would probably work at 25 to 35 per hour and hold a companys total expense below 20,000 per year.  Looking for a job like this is almost like looking for gold.  Are ther companies and jobs out there like this or am I just deceiving myself.
                                    Thanks for your help
                                    Nicholas

Answer
Hi Nicholas,
I have on occasion found telecommuting controller jobs so making job searches part of your job hunt effort is important. Just remember to stick to job search sites (Craigslist, Monster, etc). However, you may have more luck contacting companies directly. The best telecommuting job I got was never advertised. Instead I sent a letter of inquiry to companies in my state (I used the web and the Yellow Pages to find them). In my letter I asked if they ever had a need for contract workers in my area, provided information on how contract workers benefited them (this is key), and included my resume. You could do the same thing. Simply research companies, prepare a professional resume and write a compelling letter. Do some research on telecommuting and how it benefits companies. Here's a resources you can check out (its the Canadian Telework Association but it has US info as well). http://www.ivc.ca/studies/us.html
