Question
Here's our problem: We have two cordless phones we normally leave on their bases. One is an AT&T with answering machine; the other is a K-Mart special of unknown brand. We also have one "traditional" phone with a corded handset. Plus, we have two computers still operating dial-up through modems (yeah, I know!). We've had this set-up for two years. Within the last week, when we try to connect with the cordless phones, they make dialing tones and we get the recording "this call cannot be completed as dialed..." We can't dial out with the cordless phones, or connect with the computers. The traditional phone works fine. We can receive calls on the cordless phones, but when we first answer they make the dialing tones...then we can talk. I've unplugged our main cordless (with the answering machine) in hopes it would run completely down and that would solve the problem, yet no luck. Centurytel says that if the traditional phone works, then the line is fine, so it's an equipment problem...probably true. But I have no idea where to start. Any suggestions? Thanks!!!

Answer
Karen,
You started out with the right idea but you need to go a little bit deeper.
Unplug BOTH base units of your cordless phones (the phone lines AND the electrical plugs) Take the handsets off the base, and turn them on, Leave them on for 24 hrs until they are completely dead, then replace them on the bases, plug the units in and recharge. (8 hours, you might need to replace the batteries depending on how good the current ones are)
If this doesn't clear your problem, check your modem by following the owners manual or contacting the mfr.
