Question
Hi.
I've been asked to select a cordless telephone system for our small business - perhaps 8 handsets including portables. While I have no direct experience in this I am the resident computer "expert" and we're just a small company and running on a shoestring budget right now. Can you recommend any particular sets that would be suitable considering we need intercom capability, mailboxes, hands-free, etc. We're replacing some ancient Northern Telecom sets for which we have no documentation or wireless capability.
Thanks.

Answer
No, sorry, I am not an expert on CPE. My area is between the building and the switch.

Phone bills can hurt a small company but if the calls aren't made, you don't get the business. If you have sales people calling long distance and a buyer doing the same, there are a few ways you could reduce your phone costs and make your company look like a big one. You can put in VoIP for all long distance calls for anyone who's calls run over $20 per month. The VoIP phone number can also serve as their direct dial number. You can get a virtual PBX service so that customers call one number and select an extension that transferes them to any number in the world. You can also have a toll free number but you have to teach people to say "Let me call you back in 2 minutes after I get off this other call". They then call the caller back on their VoIP phone. This should be possible with a small company.

Go to http://ewebtelecom.com and look on the broadband page at Packet8, the business page at Ring Central, and the Toll free page at Kall8. You may also want to plug in your requirements with the Best Rate calculator on the home page and the VAR network on the business page to see if you can save some money.
