Subject: state to state long distance service

Question
Because they all seem to charge fees regardless of whether you make state to state calls, is it possible to cancel my present service, and just use the 1010 numbers for interstate calls, or do I revert back to ATT, which is what I had before?  I now have MCI.

Answer
Hi, Barbara!

People ask me this every day at work, and it's an excellent question.  Somehow, people think that they're required to sign-up with a long distance carrier when they apply for local service.  This is not the case.

If you call long distance ALOT, you might get a better rate with one of the carriers, monthly charge or not.  But if you're like me, and only make long distance calls once in a while, then you need to call your local phone company and switch to 'no selection'.  Then you can use a 1010 number.  Better yet, you can have your cake and eat it too.  I used to use 1010811 which is .05 cents per min, with a 10 min minimum.  But you can sign up for 'Vartec', which is the name of the company, and get those rates without having to push '1010' every time.  Call your local phone company and they'll set it up.  The pic code is 0811...

That's the best deal I've found.  I don't work for them, so I have no reason to reccommend them...;)

Hope that helps............Bill
