Subject: telephone noise

Question
I have two phone lines comming into my home. The main phone line has a humming noise in it. If I unplug the line out at the box and plug in a phone line rite into a phone the humming is gone. What is causing the humming? The second phone line is for internet service but when I hook up a phone to it there is no humming noise.

Answer
Steve,
OK-we know it's NOT a problem with the telephone company lines/service, or your internet access line. It has to be either your equipment or voice line/jacks start there.
The hum is usually caused by a crossed (Shorted) wire so check all your jacks and make sure they are all tight and the wires are not touching any other of a different color. Also check ALL the lines to any device you may have that's plugged into your telephone jacks, such as: caller id box, tevo, answering machine, etc... Now check your phone cords for any damage and replace them if you see any. If you have a cordless phone START your search with that, by unplugging it from your jack and see if the hum stops, if so  try moving the cordless base to another jack, or have the cordless phone replaced.
