Television Trivia - 1970s TV live action robot show

Expert: Shae - 5/23/2009

Question
what is the name of the late 1970s show where 4 or 5 teens could transform into jets and also merge into a giant robot.
something like a forerunner of Powerangers but not as cheezy.
the show may have been Japanese as I seem to remember the audio being dubbed.

Answer
Ray-
I'm not super familiar with shows in the "Super Sentai" genre. (The series that was the genesis for things like Power Rangers.) What you describe is the plot for "Voltron", which is from the 70's and had teen pilots who merged into a giant robot. But Voltron was animated, not live action. The only live action show I could find that sort of fit your description was "Dynaman" but the teens in it had different kinds of vehicles. Both shows came from series that originated in Japan.
I hope that helps. Let me know if you need me to do more research.
Happy Viewing!
