About Test Pattern Guy
Expertise
I`m a pop culture freak who loves TV, old and new... ask me about classic TV, new TV, commercials, jingles, cartoons, Saturday morning shows, you name it. If I don`t know it, I can find it out... Believe it or not, I even know some of the infomercials by heart.. "Set it and forget it!"

Experience
Lots of time reading the TV Guide, and way too many nights of insomnia...

Question -
I'm looking to find the name and company that produced 2 cartoons I remember seeing as a kid.

One was about 2 animals (cats) and they would spin this punishment wheel and the loser would have to do it.  One punishment was called "roll out the barrell" which was loaded with gun powder and a small hole.  The loser pushed the barrell leaving a trail and the winner would then light a match. You know the rest.

The other catroon was about a dog that loved meat so much he had a scam going where he would return lost pets and get money.  There was also a theme about gravy.  At the end he buys a meat store and is so fat he can't move.  Those he victimized come to see him with a huge drum of gravy, shove a funnel in the dog's mouth and say "this time we didn't forget the gravy"

Answer -
Hi, Ken...

Can you tell me a bit more about these cartoons? Not finding anything on them right now, but, the way you describe them, they both sound like Tex Avery Cartoons... can you remember anything about the overall look of the cartoon? Did they look like typical Warner Brothers cartoons? Or more like the MGM cartoons, like the early "Tom and Jerry" shorts or "Droopy Dog" shorts? Anything you can remember might help us find these for you...

Let me know in a follow-up...

TPG

I would say they were more like typical Warner Brothers cartoons.  They were probably banned due to the violence (which never bothered us when we were kids).

The dog with the scam cartoon had the dog as a big overbearing bull-dog type and he would knok on people's doors pretending to return lost pets. They would immediately feed the returned pet with a big bowl of food and the dog would barge in and eat it, then slap the pet saying "you forgot the gravy".  The cartoon as I remember was well done and rich in color.  The length would have been the typical length of any FHLeghorn, TweetieBird, or similar cartoon.

Answer
Hi, Ken...

FOUND THEM!!! Both Warner Bros, neither by Tex Avery...

The "gravy" one is called "Chow Hound." It was made in 195, directed by Chuck Jones... as of now, this one is not on any DVD collection, but I would imagine it will be soon...

The "Punishment Wheel" one is called "Early to Bet." A cat is bitten by the Gambling Bug, and keeps betting a bulldog and losing. When he loses, he faces the Punishment Wheel." This one IS available on DVD... it's on the "Looney Tunes Golden Collection, Vol.1" and is on Disc 4 of the DVD collection...

Hope this helps,

TPG
