Hi All! I stumbled upon this looking for the same show, or so I thought. It turns out that Space Giants IS the show I was thinking of, and I have been trying to figure that out since I was a kid. I think the show you are looking for is Johnny Sokko, which was a movie made into a TV show. It did have one robot with similar characteristics to Space Giants and a little Japanese boy who controlled it. Hope this helps!

Hi the following show that you describe has 2 titles and a movie, Giant Robo, or in some places
in the U.S. was titled Johnny Sokko and his FLYING ROBOT, THE MOVIE WAS TITLE VOYAGE INTO SPACE. I HOPE THIS ANSWER WILL SUIT YOU.

I was thinking it may have been called Johny Sockit but can't find google reference to it. Will keep looking. I did find Ultra man videos on You Tube which were great.
