Looking for a weekend getaway? There is no where else like Memphis. For the best soul food, BBQ, history, old architecture, shopping, festivals along the mighty Mississippi, museums, concerts, or just taking in the special Memphis vibe, ask me about this great southern city. I can tell you all about lodging in Memphis. Looking for somewhere really special to stay? Ask me about Shellcrest (www.shellcrest.com ), a historic inn minutes from downtown and midtown. Looking for the best place for beauty products in Memphis? Ask about Maggies Pharm ( www.maggiespharm.com ). Would you like to stumble onto a major discount outlet for Pottery Barn and Williams and Sonoma? How about catching a spectacular sunset spread over the Mississippi and downtown over cocktails? I can give tourists and business travelers great ideas on how extract the sweetness from this old south town.

Question
Hello. I am planning to travel with a friend through Chattanooga and Memphis in mid-March. I am wondering if you can tell me what the must-see sights are for off-the-beaten path travelers such as ourselves---that is, what are the weirdest sights to see in Tennessee? Any bizarre historical sights and anything having to do with presidents/vice-presidents?

Answer
Hi Rich,

Memphis is really my area of expertise. First, where you stay can make a big difference. My favorite lodging hands down is Shellcrest  ( www.shellcrest.com )...it is very unique and special there. You get to experience a beautiful, historic home for less than the price of the Peabody Hotel ( which is also a good choice ). Check out the website. I also like the Madison Hotel, and a place called Talbot Heirs Guesthouse. With a simple search I am sure you can pull up their websites.

You must spend some time downtown. Take the trolley, explore lower Main Street, take in some blues on Beale Street, have a cocktail at the Peabody Hotel lobby, or even better, grab your drink and take the elevator to the rooftop deck ( the most amazing view of Memphis and the mighty Mississippi are on the deck....great brunch on Sundays on the deck)....also, have some BBQ at Rendevous ( across from Peabody ) the best BBQ east of the Mississippi, heck, and west of the Mississippi, too! Other great eats not to be missed are Fino's on Madison Ave, and Paulettes on Madison Ave.....( both are in an area called Overton Square...a pretty interesting shopping area). Paulettes is awesome for Sunday Brunch.

If you are interested in shopping, I can recommend some things....just write me back before I go into too much detail. Also, there are some great art museums, and plenty of cultural activities. Sometimes it is just fun to take in the architecture. Let me know if I should elaborate.

If you want to see something bizarre goto Graceland, home of Elvis. There is also a casino town nearby called Tunica if you like to gamble. I have always wanted to take a riverboat ride on the Mississippi. That's what Memphis is really about.

Feel free to write back. If I don't hear from you have a super time in Memphis. It is a very special place to be.
