Expert: Jim Leupold Date: 6/4/2008 Subject: When to Play 3rd set ?
Question Hi,
I've seen many times that say suppose Player 'A' let two sets with say 6-0, 6-0 then also 3rd set will play why ?
Though Player 'A' already won two sets then also why many times 3rd set comes into picture ?
Regards,
Raju
Answer Dear Raju,
Most tournaments use the 2 out or 3 sets, or the first player to 2 sets wins.
Some tournaments, such as the four majors, the Australian Open, the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open, use a 3 out of 5 set format. In this case, the player who wins three sets first is the winner. These matches can even go up to five sets. You might see a 5-7, 6-3, 6-7, 6-4, 7-5 type of score in a really close, long 5-set match.
Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are playing right now in the finals of the French Open. One of them will have to win 3 sets before the other in order to win the tournament.
