Question
Dear Dathaeus,
I like to play tennis out doors all year if I can.  The temperatures can get to as low as 0°F, although usually do not get to below 20°F.  You can imagine that the balls do not bounce very well.  Can you recommend a tennis ball that bounces well at low temperatures?  Thanks Dick Schlueter

Answer
Hi and thank you for asking.  I have played in very cold weather up in NYC back when... and the thing that helps the most is to use "lighter" balls.  No ball bounces well in cold weather, definitely not those pressureless balls (because even though they dont have the air getting cold inside, the surface gets cold and hard and becomes even less resilient)...  so the best ones would be the hard court Penn balls, and then Wilson.  Do not use the clay balls or Dunlop.  They are wound more heavily, and therefore, will not fly as well in the cold air, nor bounce as well.  The "smaller" balls will also provide less shock to your arm when they are hit and are actually a bit lighter in mass.

Hope this helps.  If you have any other questions, please first check out my tennis FAQ at

Expertise

I can answer any questions about tennis except most personal habits of the ATP and WTA pros. So my knowledge includes etiquette, improving your game in every aspect possible, including more power or consistency to serve and strokes, technique, mental game, physical training and preparation, diet, strings and stringing, etc, etc. Also please keep in mind before you ask me any questions on rackets that it is near impossible for me to help you in this category unless I know your game and even then, there are hundreds of rackets out there that can suit anyone`s game. I will simply suggest you demo a few Wilson rackets where I am sponsored, and that`s the best I can do there.

Experience

I have been teaching since I was 17 years old, and have been a professional stringer since I was 16. I have taught and still teach all levels, from beginners to tournament players, as well as serving as a professional hitter for some of the top players in the East. I continue to play men's open tournaments whenever I have time, and am the master stringing professional at my club. I also follow the ATP tournaments, but not in detailed fashion anymore.
