Subject: Grunting during play

Question
In high school tennis matches;  Is it okay to grunt or make other noise when hitting?

Answer
Dear Terri,
Because some (many?) school districts have different rules, I cannot possibly know the answer.  I have heard that some do not allow any clapping or encouragement (e.g., "let's go") from the spectators.  I have never heard of any that prohibit grunting from players.  That does seem extreme unless it was so loud as to cause a distraction to the opponent or other players.
And that is the criteria for USTA and ITA play.  As long as it's not extreme, it's not a problem, and in those cases the opponent has to complain--not parents, coaches, etc.  Their opinions mean little.
I can tell you in nearly a decade of officiating, I've had this particular problem arise maybe 2-3 times.
I'd suggest you check w/ your local superintendent and get the answer from the top, perhaps even in writing if it's of great concern.
Good luck.
Ed
