Question We have a 9 year old terrier. For the past few months he will pee on furniture if I leave him. I take him out just before I go and it doesn't seem to matter how long we are gone.
Can you help
Answer Hi Dixie. Your dog might have a medical condition that is not allowing him to hold his bladder as long as necessary. Or he could be having some separation anxiety. I would have your vet check him to rule out any medical issues.
In the meantime, I suggest that you pick a room that doesn't have carpeting, such as a bathroom, laundry room, etc. for him to stay in while you are away. Instead of closing the door, I suggest purchasing a child gate to put in the doorway. This way your dog can see out and not feel like he's being punished. In that room I would put water, lots of chew toys, a bed, or a crate with the door removed, and pee pads or newspapers.
This way he can have some freedom to move about and play, and a safe place to relieve himself (if necessary) without ruining your furniture.
Good luck, and please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any more questions. Sincerely, Penny D.
