Question He is 4 yrs. old, and has been fixed for about 8 months now. we have another dog(Lab), he get into fights with the lab. Bites him at the neck and head. He has started becoming very aggressive with me and my husband here in the past couple weeks. I don't know what to do... I have 2 little cousins that come over and like to play with him also, but I am scared that he may bite at them. Please give me some good advice.
Answer Hi Donna. As you probably already know this problem will not go away by itself, and ignoring the problem will not help.
A dog is not psychotic, crazy, or vicious when displaying aggressive behavior. The most common reason for aggressive dog behavior is instability in the dominance hierarchy of the dog pack, your family.
There are several types of aggressive behavior tenancies in dogs such as; Dominant aggressive, Fear aggressive, Possessive aggressive, and Protective aggressive behavior patterns.
Punishment for aggressive behavior tends to escalate the problem, so it is best to seek professional help from someone who can come to your home and work with both you, your family, and your dog. I suggest that you contact a specialist in your area, one that can come to your home. The specialist can evaluate your pack, and advise you on how to work together with your family and dog for a more harmonious lifestyle.
In the meantime, here is a website that explains, in more detail, the different type of aggressive behavior traits you might be experiencing. http://www.doggiesparadise.com/aggressive.shtml
Good luck, and please do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of further assistance. Sincerely, Penny D.
