Question i recentley to by dog to the vet as she had diareeha, and blood clots in here urine, she was given two shots of antbiotics and is currentley taking a week supply of tablets., Her diareeha has now gone and i havent noticed blood in her rine, but her breathing is rapid continuous, when she is asleep and awake, i counted 38 rises in her chest in a minute, she was treated for cystitus, and gastroentiritus, she has not been spade and she is 13 years old, cross breed alsation and border collie, im concerned that she has something serious wrong with her, i am worried that because she is breathing this way that she might be in some pain. thankyou
Answer Hi Debbie. You are correct, rapid breathing can be an indicator that your dog is in pain. The normal respiration rate in dogs is 17 - 20 breaths per minute.
I would contact my vet, if you haven't already done so, and alert them to your dog's condition. There can be several causes, possibly an reaction to the medication she is taking, possible that can only be determined by a physical examine.
Considering the age of your dog (13 years)in order to properly diagnose the problem, your vet may need to order one or more of the following lab tests such as, blood tests, urinalysis, x-rays, coagulation tests, fecal evaluation, and or a ultrasound or endoscopic (fiberoptic) evaluation of the gastrointestinal tract.
