About Beth Adams
Expertise
I have 10+ yrs rescuing Cairn terriers. Ask me about rescue work and re-homing rescued terriers. I am also proudly owned by a Jack Russell Terrier rescue. I am also keenly aware that terriers are significantly different from other kinds of dogs, and often not the best choice for some owners. HOWEVER I AM NOT A VET! PLEASE DO NOT ASK ME IN-DEPTH MEDICAL QUESTIONS THAT SHOULD BE DIRECTED ONLY TOWARDS MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS. I WILL BE HAPPY TO ASSIST WITH BASIC MEDICAL QUESTIONS/NEEDS THAT I CAN OFFER MY PERSONAL OPINION ON. If you ask me questions about breeding, please expect me to be direct about my opinion on this topic.

Experience
10+ yrs owning and rescuing cairn terriers. Proudly owned by a Jack Russell Terrier rescue. My JRT is active in being a foster brother, and earthdog and agility events and we're having a blast

Question
QUESTION: i have a cairn terrier i got her at just over 8 weeks as the owners did not want her as shre was runt of the litter and was born with 3 and a half legs so i went to see her and loved her from day one would not change her for the world. she came in to season 5 weeks ago and i have been told terriers are pron to having fantom pregs her nipples are all up and have started to swell was wondering what was going on really as most of the seasons that are old terriers we have had have lasted 3 weeks at max can u help me please thank u vicki and love lovely missie

ANSWER: Vikki

I have very little experience with dogs in season since my own dogs, and all rescue fosters, have been spayed.

Yes, seasons usually only last about 3 weeks, so I would take her to a vet to rule out anything that might be a real problem.  I would be a little concerned that since she was born with a visible birth defect that she might have another that is not visible from the outside.

Bless you for loving this kid !  I have had many "disabled" fosters - but they were never really disabled.

Let me know how you make out

QUESTION: thank you for your help it has not came to us that she is going though a fathom pregnancy as she has started to produce milk so as soon as i can get an appointment i will be taking her to the vet as soon as i no more i will e-mail you again and let you know what has gone on thank you again Vicki and the lovely Missie

ANSWER: Sure sounds like a false pregnancy.

Please do give me an update once she's been to a vet.

My poor foster cairn is healing up today from having a hernia repair yesterday. She is not impressed that another vet missed it when they spayed her.  She spent the first years of her life as a breeding dog in a puppymill.

QUESTION: it is a false pregnancy she has milk witch its not nice for her but she is coping ok been told that if she get to loaded in milk then i have to take her back down and they will give her an injection to stop it but till then just cut her food down and take all her cuddle toys away( i feel really mean as she loves them) and if she starts to huddle things i have to take them away as well feel really sorry for her but giving her lots of love and cuddles so she is in her element bless her. Got the picture of yours yesterday she looks so much like Missie but a little bigger. missies mum looked nothing like Missie when i got her she was quite a big dog compared to ours but hope that she feels better soon take care and thank you so much for your help
Vicki

Answer
Vicki -

Poor kiddo. I sure hope she dries up soon.  You're right - taking away everything she wants to treat like a puppy feels mean, but it's important in order to help her hormones return to normal.

Chloe weighs 11 lbs, so she's pretty small.
