AboutJKC Expertise I am not a native Austinite, but lived in Austin since 1989. I certainly can not answer everything there is to know about Austin, but can give you a candid answer/opinion based on first-hand experience. I decided to volunteer (or pretend to be an expert) since there is no Austin "expert" in this site.
I moved to Austin from my hometown of Houston back in the
early 90's, and am thinking about re-locating back there again
now from LA. My husband and I are looking for a neighborhood,
probably on the outskirts of Austin with pretty hills, views,
safety, and great schools for our little one.
Any recommendations for neighborhoods to check on? It's been
so long since we lived there, I don't remember much except that
I liked it.
Thanks for being an Austin expert, and take care!
Beth
Answer Conventional wisdom ranks the school districts in the following order.
There may be another ISD in far south Austin, but I am not knowledgeable about it.
Eanes ISD covers the high-end neighborhoods along 360 (Capital of TX Hwy). See "EISD Boundary Map" under "District" at the URL above to see where the EISD boundary lies. Its lone high school, Westlake High, was ranked thirtysomething in the nation among *public* high schools by Newsweek or similar magazine. Westlake Physics AP class scored the highest Physics AP average score in the world this year. Not just in the country but in the whole world. (I don't live in EISD.) Homes/condos in ESID starts around $500,000, and most of them will offer all/most of things you are looking for - good views, safety, and good schools. There are nice apartments in EISD as well.
One of RRISD's high schools, Westwood High, was ranked in the 50's or 60's in the nation by the same magazine that ranked Westlake in the 30's. Some homes in the Westwood High area offer the similar attributes as those in EISD - good view, safety, and good schools. The difference here is that homes in RRISD vary from $125,000 to $900,000. I live in RRSID.
Homes in PISD will NOT offer any view.
Few homes in AISD *may* offer view, but I am not positive.
If you have further questions after checking out the URL's above, please don't hesitate to ask. Good luck.
