Subject: Nichrome wire melting temp?

Question
Would 40 gauge Ni-Chrome Wire melt and break if heated to 2170 degrees Fahrenheit in an electric slow fire kiln with two clay posts holding it taught and clay material connected/wrapped around it? And what gauge Ni-Chrome wire would be able to withstand 2170 degrees F ?
Thank you,
Sharon

Answer
Hi Sharon,

Ni-chrome wire typically melts at 2550 F and so would not melt at 2170F. The melting temperature is independent of the gauge so you can use any gauge. You should bear in mind that the wire will expand (become longer) as it heats up and shrink again on cooling.

Hope this helps.
Best wishes
Kevin
