Question I've heard several times that salt makes water boil faster and that is why people add it to the food thier cooking. I dissagreed and saying that it would raise the boiling point and make it boil slower. I googled it and I was right about that but it said that it does make the food cook faster becuase it allows the temp. of the water to get higher. Is that true and if so how does it work?
Answer Hi Braynna,
Adding salt to water allows the salt to be spread evenly throughout the water. Water has to be heated up to break the bonds that hold the water together as a liquid to make it boil as a gas (steam). When salt is added the bonds between the salt and the water are stronger than those between water alone so the boiling point is raised a little.
