Thyroid Problems - Neck Lumps and extreem fatigue

Expert: Robert Arnone, DC - 4/24/2009

Question
For the past 3 months I have been experiencing extreem fatigue, and pressure in my head. After being examined in urgent medicine the doctor noticed two lumps in my neck. He stated that they were larger then normal, and possably lymph nodes. I have never felt pain from the lumps so I didn't know I had them. However, once the doctor pressed (quite hard) into the one node I almost cried with the pain. Within 1 week of this examination I am now experiencing a wired sensation in my neck when I swollow any food. It feels rather strange as the food passes the area of the largest lump.

The doctor has ordered a ultra sound of my neck & pelvic area, but the soonest I could get tested is May 11. The pelvic area was ordered due to a lump I have just inside the opening of my private area.

Should I be concened that these lumps are of a cancer nature? Or is this most likley a virus of some sort causing swollen nodes? Is this normal to have such horrifuc pain upon the doctors pressing on the lumps? The lumps do not cause me any pain otherwise.

What is your take on what is happening?
**The lumps are on my riht side only.
**I also have a very low iron, that despite my taking iron pills since last Dec. my iron level & stores have not improved.

Answer
Leslie,
The lumps are due to an immune system malfunction, and whether they are cancerous or not, you still should be concerned with what is causing the immune system malfunction and having that located and corrected as soon as is possible.  This is the only way for you to get well, if that is what you are indeed looking for.
As far as the iron trouble, iron supplements do not help you, you are wasting your money, and they may actually be making you worse.
If you are in need of additional iron in your diet, then eat foods that are naturally rich in iron, for example:

Green Leafy Vegetables: Spinach, Asparagus, Broccoli, Collard Greens, Mustard Greens, Kale, Turnip Greens, Parsley, Cabbage
Beef, Pork, Lamb (Pick red meats that are lean)
Liver, Tofu, Barley, Potato
Salmon, Shrimp, Tuna, Oysters, Clams, and most kinds of seafood.
Most kind of Dried Beans: Lima Beans, Kidney Beans, Navy Beans, Soy Beans, Chick Peas, Pinto Beans, Black Eye Beans
Nuts: Almonds, Cashews, Walnuts, Sunflower Seeds, Sesame Seeds
Dried Fruits: Apricots, Raisins, Dates - Prunes, Figs
Turkey, Chicken, Egg Yolks

Here's a clue for you in your quest for health;  Your Immune System is controlled and coordinated by your Nervous System (Mainly your Brain Stem).

Yours in Best Health,
Dr Robert Arnone
