About Karen Brawner Expertise I will answer any questions you have regarding the thyroid whether it be cancer, cysts (types), hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, blood tests for thyroid problems, surgery, fine needle biopsies etc...
Experience My complex cysts on my right thyroid gland and the isthmus were found my accident when my doctor thought I was having a TIA. The ultrasound found a complex cysts the size of a golf ball (which turned out to be the size of a tennis ball when it was surgically remove). Doctors were totally surprised because for 5 years, including the day I went to surgery, all of my thyroid blood work was "within the normal range". So much for blood work being conclusive..
Question I just have one specific question: What do you do if your thyroid test shows 'normal' but you have all the symptoms of the condition? where do you go from there? I had mono 6 years ago, have never recovered and am fatigued beyond compare, so depressed my thoughts are turning in an unhealthy direction. I have brain fog, cholestrol shot up from one annual checkup to the next, and I have always suffered from depression, so at my dr's visit today, she basically told me AGAIN that is was all in my head - mainly because I am in an unhappy marriage. I know my body and I know there is something else that makes me not want to get out of bed, take care of my child/house, etc. Where do I go from here?
Thanks for a prompt response - I'm really getting desperate.

Answer Dear Faye, If your doctor is a GP, family doctor or an OB/GYN then I STRONLY suggest that you get a second opinion and see an endocrinologist..... These other doctors just do NOT know that thyroid blood work is TOTALLY unreliable and you probably need a doctor who only deals with endocrine glands problems like the thyroid.... You probably also need to have an ultrasound done of your thyroid to be sure there are NO nodules or masses on the thyroid... You may even need an iodine uptake ct-scan.. You can have nodules/masses and they will NOT interfer with blood work results.... In fact, I had 2 complex cysts on my right thyroid gland and the isthmus of the thyroid and even on the day of my thyroid surgery to remove the right thyroid gland and the isthmus, ALL of thyroid blood work came back "NORMAL"..... GET A SECOND OPINION and tell your doctor to STOP blaming "in your head" and admit that she does not know what is wrong with you..... When doctors don't know what else to look for, they blame STRESS.....
