About Karen Brawner Expertise I will answer any questions you have regarding the thyroid whether it be cancer, cysts (types), hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, blood tests for thyroid problems, surgery, fine needle biopsies etc...
Experience My complex cysts on my right thyroid gland and the isthmus were found my accident when my doctor thought I was having a TIA. The ultrasound found a complex cysts the size of a golf ball (which turned out to be the size of a tennis ball when it was surgically remove). Doctors were totally surprised because for 5 years, including the day I went to surgery, all of my thyroid blood work was "within the normal range". So much for blood work being conclusive..
Question My ultr-sound report reads as follows:
The right lobe of the thyrod gland measures 5.5x2.3x2.5cm. Two nodules are identified in the mid-aspect of the right thyroid lobe which measure 1.1cm. The left lobe of the thyrod gland has mildly increased in size and measures 6.0x2.0x3.0 cm. The previously identified cyst in the mid-aspect of the left thyroid lobe has increased and is complex, measuring 1.2cm. An adjacent 2.0 cm nodule is identified more superiorly. Two nodules are identified in the inferior aspect of the left thyroid lobe which measure 1.8cm and .07cm. A 2.0cm nodule is identified in the isthmus. Otherwise, the isthmus measures 0.6cm in diameter.
Answer Dear Jackie, In MY opinion you need surgery to get ride of this left thyroid gland and the isthmus as soon as possible.....
I say this because complex cysts are a possible indication for thyroid cancer and these are LARGE.... Fine Needle Aspiration for biopsy is NOT 100% guaranteed when it comes to cancer and this is why I had my right thyroid gland and the isthmus REMOVED with surgery and completely biopsied just to make sure it was NOT cancer.....
See your doctor or a surgeon for a second opinion or for removal....
