About Karen Brawner
Expertise
I will answer any questions you have regarding the thyroid whether it be cancer, cysts (types), hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, blood tests for thyroid problems, surgery, fine needle biopsies etc...

Experience
My complex cysts on my right thyroid gland and the isthmus were found my accident when my doctor thought I was having a TIA. The ultrasound found a complex cysts the size of a golf ball (which turned out to be the size of a tennis ball when it was surgically remove). Doctors were totally surprised because for 5 years, including the day I went to surgery, all of my thyroid blood work was "within the normal range". So much for blood work being conclusive..

Thyroid Problems - Para Thyroid - high calcium level after a blood test

Expert: Karen Brawner - 6/4/2004

Question
Could you tell me what are the symptons/effects of a high calcium content?  I had a blood test in early January this year and this higher than normal reading was shown.  What causes this to happen?

Answer
Dear Maureen,  The main symptoms of too much calcium in the blood is 1. feeling run down 2. sleeping poorly 3. irritability 4. memory problems.....

The parathyroid gland is the MAIN cause of high calcium levels in the blood....  The parathyroid gland's MAIN function is to regulate and control calcium....  Therefore, if you have been diagnosed with a problem of the parathyroid gland, then this could be a cause for your high calcium blood levels....

Since I do not know the exact test that was done, and there are two different calcium blood tests that can be run, I really can't give you more information than this... But under both tests, parathyroidism IS a diagnosis....

You may want to look at this web site for more info....

Thank you,   karen
