About Karen Brawner
Expertise
I will answer any questions you have regarding the thyroid whether it be cancer, cysts (types), hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, blood tests for thyroid problems, surgery, fine needle biopsies etc...

Experience
My complex cysts on my right thyroid gland and the isthmus were found my accident when my doctor thought I was having a TIA. The ultrasound found a complex cysts the size of a golf ball (which turned out to be the size of a tennis ball when it was surgically remove). Doctors were totally surprised because for 5 years, including the day I went to surgery, all of my thyroid blood work was "within the normal range". So much for blood work being conclusive..

Question
Hi Karen, thanks so much for taking the time to answer my question.

My girlfriend began a drugs trial to reverse her underactive thyroid, her symptons include:

-Sensitivity to cold
-Hair Loss
-Weight Gain (13st at 5ft)

Currently there has been no progress with it whatsoever, and she is 6 months into the programme.

I was wondering if you could recommond a healthy alternative, perhaps 'The Coconut Diet' which would allow affective results to be achieved.

If she has to stick with her condition that is fine, i am just seeking all means to help her out.

Thank you so much for you time Karen.

Many thanks,

Glenn  (Ireland)

Answer
Dear Glenn,  I know of NO alternative approach to any type of thyroid problem....  People with thyroid problems like this need medication for life and some of the symptoms will NEVER STOP.....  Weight gain can still happen even with medication and it up the person with hypothyroidism to WATCH what they eat, eat a proper diet of fruit and vegetables and stay off the sweets, fats, etc and exercise because the medication will NOT reduce weight gain if they don't....

thank you,   karen
