About Karen Brawner
Expertise
I will answer any questions you have regarding the thyroid whether it be cancer, cysts (types), hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, blood tests for thyroid problems, surgery, fine needle biopsies etc...

Experience
My complex cysts on my right thyroid gland and the isthmus were found my accident when my doctor thought I was having a TIA. The ultrasound found a complex cysts the size of a golf ball (which turned out to be the size of a tennis ball when it was surgically remove). Doctors were totally surprised because for 5 years, including the day I went to surgery, all of my thyroid blood work was "within the normal range". So much for blood work being conclusive..

Question
Hi Karen,

I had a total thyroidectomy on January 10 and here's my question:

The surgeon left 2 parathyroids behind and took everything else. The surgery went off without a hitch. I am on the mend other than some tightness and swelling in the incision area.

Last night I had an episode: My heart started racing and I felt sort of sick. This lasted about 5 minutes but it was very unnerving to say the least. What do you think could have caused this? Will this happen again? I thought having my thyroid removed would cease those symptoms? I am on Levoxyl .100 mcg. I have been on this med at different strenghts for over 16 years ranging from .75-.150mg. She decided to start me off at .100 after surgery.

Any advice and what I should expect would be helpful!

Thanks in advance,

Natalye

Answer
Dear Natalye,  You need to let your doctor know what is going on....  It is common for symptoms to continue after surgery and until medication starts working and gets into your system....  You need to make sure that this heart racing is not associated with the surgery and anesthesia in anyway....  It may also be that the medication strength is too much or too little and I can't help you with that, only your doctor...

thank you,   karen
