About Karen Brawner
Expertise
I will answer any questions you have regarding the thyroid whether it be cancer, cysts (types), hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, blood tests for thyroid problems, surgery, fine needle biopsies etc...

Experience
My complex cysts on my right thyroid gland and the isthmus were found my accident when my doctor thought I was having a TIA. The ultrasound found a complex cysts the size of a golf ball (which turned out to be the size of a tennis ball when it was surgically remove). Doctors were totally surprised because for 5 years, including the day I went to surgery, all of my thyroid blood work was "within the normal range". So much for blood work being conclusive..

Question
I was diagnosed several years ago with Graves Disease and have an overactive Thyroid.Does a Goitre ever form in such circumstances and if so could a very slowly growing lump on the back of the neck be a goitre. There is a History of Thyroid problems on my Mothers Side of the family and in Fact my Mother had very large goitre's removed from the front of her Neck and also Lung Areas ( She Had Underactive Thyroid )I am Male aged 58 Years

Answer
Dear Denis,   Goiters ONLY grow on the front of the neck area right infront of the thyroid itself....  If you have a slow growing lunp on the BACK of your neck this is NOT a goiter, but possibly a tumor which could be cancerous or benign....  You need to have this checked out immediately...

Also goiters can NOT grow on the lungs....  Nodules or tumors can grow on the lungs, but NOT goiters.....

Thank you,   karen
