About Karen Brawner
Expertise
I will answer any questions you have regarding the thyroid whether it be cancer, cysts (types), hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, blood tests for thyroid problems, surgery, fine needle biopsies etc...

Experience
My complex cysts on my right thyroid gland and the isthmus were found my accident when my doctor thought I was having a TIA. The ultrasound found a complex cysts the size of a golf ball (which turned out to be the size of a tennis ball when it was surgically remove). Doctors were totally surprised because for 5 years, including the day I went to surgery, all of my thyroid blood work was "within the normal range". So much for blood work being conclusive..

Thyroid Problems - calcification on thyroid gland

Expert: Karen Brawner - 2/21/2006

Question
I went to the chiroprator today with a killer headache. My regular dr was off so I used one I had seen in the past. He took a neck x-ray and said he thought I should consult my regular dr  He said he say something on my thyroid gland. So I went right over to my md's office and showed her the x-ray She said it looks like calcification and if I wanted she would order a ultra sound. I thought I would wait until the blood work comes back and then decide. After reading this I am thinking I should go ahead and schedule this test. What do you think?

Answer
Dear Laura,   Don't wait.....  Schedule the ultrasound immediately.....  Thyroid blood work is one of the most UNRELIABLE blood tests there are and people can have all thyroid blood work "within normal limits" and still have masses, nodules, cysts and even thyroid cancer and still have thyroid blood work "witnin normal limits......

thank you,   karen
