About Karen Brawner
Expertise
I will answer any questions you have regarding the thyroid whether it be cancer, cysts (types), hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, blood tests for thyroid problems, surgery, fine needle biopsies etc...

Experience
My complex cysts on my right thyroid gland and the isthmus were found my accident when my doctor thought I was having a TIA. The ultrasound found a complex cysts the size of a golf ball (which turned out to be the size of a tennis ball when it was surgically remove). Doctors were totally surprised because for 5 years, including the day I went to surgery, all of my thyroid blood work was "within the normal range". So much for blood work being conclusive..

Subject: cyst in thyroid gland

Question
right liobe of thyroid gland measures 4.0 x 2.3 x 3.7cm. and there isa complex cyst within the right lobe of the thyroid gland centered within themidpole of the right lobe of the thyroid gland. this cyst measures 3.0 cm in greatest craniocaudal dimension and 2.2 x 2.5 cm in greatest transverse diasmeter.

left lobe of thyroid gland measures 3.1 x 1.0 x 1.2 cm there is a solid nodule in the midpole of the left lobe of the thyroid gland measuring 2.1 x 0.8 x 0.8 cm.

does this mean the cyst is canceris. and what can be done for it.

Answer
Dear Alannah,  This means that this complex cyst COULD be cancerous and since Fine Needle Biopsy is NOT always accurate and can not detect certain types of cancer, my suggestion would be to have the right lobe of you thyroid removed by surgery and be completely biopsied...

If it is found to be cancer, then of course you will have to have the recommended treatment for the TYPE of cancer that is found and whether or not it has spread outside of the thyroid gland itself...  This could be chemotherapy and/or radiation....

You have a pretty large complex cyst and if this radiology report is based on an ultrasound that you had, it could actually be a lot larger that this says, because some of it could be hidden from the picture....

thank you,   karen
