About Karen Brawner Expertise I will answer any questions you have regarding the thyroid whether it be cancer, cysts (types), hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, blood tests for thyroid problems, surgery, fine needle biopsies etc...
Experience My complex cysts on my right thyroid gland and the isthmus were found my accident when my doctor thought I was having a TIA. The ultrasound found a complex cysts the size of a golf ball (which turned out to be the size of a tennis ball when it was surgically remove). Doctors were totally surprised because for 5 years, including the day I went to surgery, all of my thyroid blood work was "within the normal range". So much for blood work being conclusive..
Question i am 26 years old have 3 kids my baby is 10 months old. can my thyroid levels affect my muenstral cycle -i checked my tsh a month ago and it was 17 -i'm on synthroid .1 -and my period is over a week late-can it all be related? i checked and neg. preg test-i also just stopped nursing but i have been getting my period since my baby is 2 month old-i will go check my tsh levels soon. do you have any explanation to this-i'm confused? thanks in advance!
Answer Dear R Oster, YES, a thyroid hormone imbalance can and often does interfer with the monthly menstral cycle.. Also stress can and will play a role in the monthly cycle too... You have a high TSH level and your hypothyroidism MUST be gotten under control, even it that means increasing your synthroid even more... You doctor also must maintain a check on your T3 and T4 levels also... Synthroid is often used along with other medications to keep all levels of thyroid hormones in balance.... Stopping nursing your baby may also alter your monthly cycle until the body adjusts to the change... I really think it more related to the thyroid problem than the nursing (stopping)....
