About Karen Brawner
Expertise
I will answer any questions you have regarding the thyroid whether it be cancer, cysts (types), hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, blood tests for thyroid problems, surgery, fine needle biopsies etc...

Experience
My complex cysts on my right thyroid gland and the isthmus were found my accident when my doctor thought I was having a TIA. The ultrasound found a complex cysts the size of a golf ball (which turned out to be the size of a tennis ball when it was surgically remove). Doctors were totally surprised because for 5 years, including the day I went to surgery, all of my thyroid blood work was "within the normal range". So much for blood work being conclusive..

Question
Have been taking between 125-150mcg of synthroid for for about 30 years now. Am 60-yrs. young and as am a down-sized professional without any insurance have abruptly stopped all meds. In last 2 weeks, have stopped (ran out of synthroid) synthroid and now find my face and eyelids are swollen, and have developed hoarseness. Have done my research.....and seems to lack of taking synthroid...Would love your feedback,  please....Also...do you know of anything I could temporarily take from a reputable  health food store until I again can afford meds?

Many thanx.

Answer
Dear Lisa,    NO HEALTH FOOD "JUNK" alternatives....  There is NOTHING that you should be taking from these places..  Infact, the alternatives would be MORE than the Synthroid..

You MUST start taking your medication again...  If you can not afford the name brand drug, then do as I do and get the GENERIC which is about 1/3 the cost and does just as good..

I would also check with your doctor and if possible get an ultrasound of your thyroid....  It sounds like you MAY very possibly have nodules or cysts growing on your thryoid and this could be causing your hoarsness especially if you are also having swallowing problems and shortness of breath.. I also go not like the sound of face and eyelid swelling.. This is NOT common.....

GET TO A DOCTOR even if you have to give up something else or hold back paying a bill....

Thank you,   karen
