About Karen Brawner
Expertise
I will answer any questions you have regarding the thyroid whether it be cancer, cysts (types), hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, blood tests for thyroid problems, surgery, fine needle biopsies etc...

Experience
My complex cysts on my right thyroid gland and the isthmus were found my accident when my doctor thought I was having a TIA. The ultrasound found a complex cysts the size of a golf ball (which turned out to be the size of a tennis ball when it was surgically remove). Doctors were totally surprised because for 5 years, including the day I went to surgery, all of my thyroid blood work was "within the normal range". So much for blood work being conclusive..

Question
Karen,   thanks for being here to help me with this. it seems it's pretty hard to find someone familiart to pass ideas by.  i was dx one year ago with hypothyroid and for the past year i have been placed on increasing amounts of synthroid only to have my tsh level rollercoaster up and down. this last time my med's were increased and my tsh increased, hence i believe the med's is causing my thryoid to function even less than it was.  i have been doing a lot of homework and have read a lot about nutrition. do you think nutrition changes can help decrease the symptoms?  thank you traci

Answer
Dear Traci, Nutrician can help change and decrease symptoms, but it will do NOTHING to correct the TSH levels or produce more thyroid hormone...

Your doctors may want to put you on a different medication or ADD T3 and/or T4 medications to your synthroid....  Often synthroid is just not enough to controll or bring under control an under-active thyroid....

I suggest that you research MORE about the medications used for treating hyPOthyroidism instead of the nutrician... Many people can not take synthroid because it simply does not work and have found that Armour and other medications work better...  Synthroid has been around for almost more years that I have been born (age 57) and the newer ones often work better....

Thank you,   karen
