About Karen Brawner
Expertise
I will answer any questions you have regarding the thyroid whether it be cancer, cysts (types), hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, blood tests for thyroid problems, surgery, fine needle biopsies etc...

Experience
My complex cysts on my right thyroid gland and the isthmus were found my accident when my doctor thought I was having a TIA. The ultrasound found a complex cysts the size of a golf ball (which turned out to be the size of a tennis ball when it was surgically remove). Doctors were totally surprised because for 5 years, including the day I went to surgery, all of my thyroid blood work was "within the normal range". So much for blood work being conclusive..

Question
Hi Karen.  My daughter has not been well for the last 9 months. She is lethargic, dizzy, light headed, has muscle weakness in her legs and arms and at times feels like she is not walking properly, has painful joints, her extremeties are cold most of the time, painful menstration, @ times depressed, because she feels so poorly. Her weight also fluctuates up to 20 pounds in a matter of days.  All blood tests have returned in a normal range until she had the blood test for thyroid anitbodies the result was 1,025, the norm being 35 I believe.  We saw an internalist yesterday and he as much as said she had to wait until her thyroid burnt out before anything could be done.  She is only 26 years old, and this is having such a negative impact on her daily living, we need information and direction.  Hoping you can educate  and help us.  Lynda

Answer
Dear Lynda,   Her Interist is NOT a specialist in thyroid and other endocrine gland problems, so I "STRONGLY" suggest that you get her to an Endocrinologist or a Thyroidologist who can properly diagnose her, take ALL of the proper blood work and even a ANA blood test and see what all is going on this her....  You know that there are 2 other endocrine glands that effect the thyroid and those are the hypothalmus and the pituitary glands, so she needs all of these checked....

thank you,   karen
