About Karen Brawner
Expertise
I will answer any questions you have regarding the thyroid whether it be cancer, cysts (types), hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, blood tests for thyroid problems, surgery, fine needle biopsies etc...

Experience
My complex cysts on my right thyroid gland and the isthmus were found my accident when my doctor thought I was having a TIA. The ultrasound found a complex cysts the size of a golf ball (which turned out to be the size of a tennis ball when it was surgically remove). Doctors were totally surprised because for 5 years, including the day I went to surgery, all of my thyroid blood work was "within the normal range". So much for blood work being conclusive..

Thyroid Problems - thyroid goiter/med

Expert: Karen Brawner - 12/28/2005

Question
a few years ago, I had a growth removed; this month when the test came number out a number 3,  my dr advised he could lower my med; the nurse had just advised it was low and may have to increase the dose; hypothyroid with the thyroid of 3 gr per day dose still keeps me pretty tired, hair falling out and very dry skin.  Would you please advise if there is another alternative to maintaining the current dose.

Answer
Dear Betty,  I am not sure about the use of the number 3 since my lab does not do thyroid blood work test that way, but it sounds like there is a descrepancy with what the doctor is doing and what the nurse said...  Nurses are not stupid like most doctors would like to believe and therefore, my suggestion for the new year is for you to see a thyroid specialist called an Endocrinologist so you can get the truth about your thyroid condition...  If this doctor is an endocrinologist, then find another one who will pay MORE ATTENTION to your symptoms and NOT to the blood work....

thank you,   karen
